The ocean waters surrounding Sri Lanka have cooled significantly over the past few days, with colder water moving from north to south along the eastern seaboard and wrapping around the southern coast, according to renowned oceanographer Professor Charitha Pattiaratchi.

Explaining the phenomenon, Prof. Pattiaratchi said the cooling pattern reflected active seasonal ocean circulation in the northern Indian Ocean, largely driven by changing wind systems and currents.

“What we are seeing is a distinct flow of cooler water along the east coast, which then curves around the southern coast. This is a regional-scale oceanographic process rather than a localised or abnormal event,” he said.
